Tu es ce qu’on peut appeler un “vieux de la vieille”… Est-ce que tes affinités musicales ont changé avec les années qui passent ?

Depuis le début de ma carrière, je suis fidèle à la ”black music”. Mon vrai choc musical professionnel se situe à la fin des années 70 quand j’ai découvert l’impact que pouvait avoir le disco sur une piste de danse et l’influence que pouvait avoir un DJ derrière ses platines. Depuis, je n’ai cessé d’être influencé par cet univers musical.

‘Respect’, ton dernier single, passe sur toutes les radios alors que le son n’est ni plus ni moins fidèle à une house “à l’ancienne”… Ça doit te faire sourire, non ?

Ça me fait surtout plaisir ! J’ai attendu patiemment mon tour, et visiblement le moment est venu. J’en suis très heureux mais je reste très humble par rapport à ce succès. Ce titre est ni plus ni moins qu’un bootleg qui a bien tourné… Ce genre de succès est souvent dû au hasard. J’ai produit ce titre en tant que DJ, avec une approche de DJ. Puis j’en ai parlé à Maxime, du label DJ Center, dans un contexte hors business. Ce n’était alors qu’un bootleg perso. Un jour plus tard, j’ai reçu un appel inattendu de Stéphane, le boss de DJ Center, qui m’a proposé de sortir ce single. Je lui ai presque ri au nez !

Tu n’y croyais pas ?

J’ai parfois voulu produire “pour que ça marche” et n’y suis jamais vraiment arrivé. Avec ‘Respect’, je suis heureux de constater que ma sincérité et ma spontanéité ont pu séduire un si large public. Et c’est un message que je voudrais transmettre à tous les jeunes DJ’s : restez “vrais” dans vos productions. N’essayez pas forcément de plaire avec des formules théoriquement gagnantes. Faîtes une musique qui vous stimule et le public vous suivra !

Tu as donc choisi de rendre hommage au tube soul d’Aretha Franklin ‘Respect’. Pourquoi avoir choisi ce titre plutôt qu’un autre ?

C’est un titre que j’ai toujours aimé pour son énergie, son message et bien sur son interprète. Et comme j’écoute de tout sauf de la House à la maison, il m’arrive de tomber sur un titre qui m’éveille une idée de bootleg. Deux heures plus tard, le track était pratiquement fini. Quand ça vient, ça vient vite et bien !

Plutôt que de prendre le sample vocal, tu as fait appel à une pointure de la house, Barbara Tucker. Vous connaissiez-vous d’avant et comment fut la collaboration ?

Oui, on a fait connaissance au moment des compilations Total Diva, que j’ai sorties entre 2002 et 2005, mais on n’avait jamais vraiment travaillé ensemble. Utiliser un sample d’Aretha Franklin n’est pas une chose simple. Quand DJ Center m’a soumis l’idée de faire appel à Barbara Tucker, je n’y croyais pas. Mais elle a accepté, même si elle savait que je souhaitais une interprétation la plus proche possible de celle d’Aretha. Elle a pris ma demande comme un challenge et un hommage. J’en suis très fier !

Un mot sur les mois à venir, prépares-tu un follow-up ?

Je ne me mets pas trop de pression. J’ai envie pour une fois d’apprécier et de vivre pleinement le moment présent. Mais Barbara me relance tous les jours pour qu’on travaille ensemble… Nous avons déjà un autre titre en chantier, très… Soulful !
